AI headshot tools have exploded in popularity. Upload a handful of selfies, pay a small fee, and within minutes you have a gallery of polished-looking portraits — no appointment, no studio, no photographer required. It sounds like a compelling shortcut.
But here’s what the ads don’t tell you. And as professional photographers who’ve seen the results up close, we think it’s worth saying plainly.
What AI Headshot Tools Actually Do
AI headshot generators don’t photograph you. They analyse patterns from your uploaded images and synthesise a new image based on those patterns, blended with the aesthetic of millions of training photos. The result is not a photo of you. It is a statistically averaged approximation of what you might look like — rendered to look like a photo.
That distinction matters more than it might seem.
The Problems With AI Headshots — Honestly
1. They don’t look like you — they look like a version of you
AI tools are trained to produce flattering, symmetrical, conventionally ‘professional’ images. In doing so, they smooth out the features that make you distinctly you — the slight asymmetry in your expression, the particular way you hold yourself, the quality in your eyes when you’re genuinely relaxed and confident.
The result often looks polished but slightly off. People who know you may not be able to articulate why, but they’ll sense it. People who don’t know you and then meet you in person will notice the difference. That gap — between your AI portrait and the real you — quietly erodes trust before you’ve said anything.
2. Experienced viewers can spot them
Recruiters, HR professionals, and senior executives look at hundreds of LinkedIn profiles. They’ve developed an eye for AI-generated imagery — the too-perfect skin texture, the slightly unnatural background blur, the eyes that don’t quite have the quality of genuine engagement. And the tools are improving rapidly — but so is the ability to detect them. Authenticity, by definition, can’t be synthesised.
3. The source photos determine the output quality
AI tools are only as good as the images you feed them. If your source photos are poorly lit, taken at unflattering angles, or shot on an older phone, the AI will do its best — but it’s working with limited material. A professional photographer controls the light, the angle, the environment, and the direction — which is precisely why professional results are consistently better, regardless of how photogenic you consider yourself to be.
4. They can’t direct you
One of the most undervalued things a professional photographer does is coach you through the session. Posture, chin angle, eye direction, the precise moment to press the shutter — these are the decisions that separate a great portrait from a mediocre one. An AI tool works backwards from existing photos of you doing none of these things correctly. It cannot create confidence it cannot find in the source material.
Most people are surprised by how different — and how much better — they look in a professionally directed studio session compared to any candid photo of themselves. That’s not luck. It’s craft.
5. They tell people something about you
Whether intentional or not, the choice to use an AI-generated headshot communicates something. In some professional contexts, it might read as resourceful. In many others — particularly in Canberra’s government, legal, and corporate sectors — it reads as a reluctance to invest in your own professional image.
